Roll with the Punches

I was more energetic during Combat today at noon with Tanya. It will be nice to switch things up starting next week.

Last nights Spinning felt so good, it inspired me to go to St Clair again tonight for another round. Pushed through the wall again, although I dailed back a bit. Turned out I was seated behind a friend from inline in the class, so it had a kind of deja vu to drafting inline funnily enough.

Had to go for Hot Pot with some inline folks to celebrate Chinese New Year and Dave's party, so I didn't get to do Yvonne's Yoga class, which would have been a nice way to cap off the week.

Made plans to go climbing with Dave tomorrow. I should take a rest day, but I haven't been climbing for so long. Hopefully we'll make it out.

WHAT I ATE TODAY
Banana, apple, orange drink, rice crepes, Beef, chicken, spinich, corn, buk choy, tofu, pork, lamb, scallop, salmon, oyster, white fish, shrimp, crab, beef balls, fish balls, mussel, udon noodle, coke, orange juice.

Let the Good Times Pump and Spin

I had a really good evening! It's funny how your day can suddenly just change. I have to admit that I woke up feeling a bit down this morning.

I managed to reluctantly drag myself back down to St Clair again in time for Tanya's Spinning Class. I had promised to show up to get her ipod to load it up with her Pump and Flow music. I'm glad I did! Tanya was on Fire tonight. I think she's turning out to be a really awesome Spinning instructor.

I basically showed up at Spinning with tired legs from last night's Inline practice with very little in the gas-tank. Tanya's really good at pushing you the right way, and next thing you know I'm cranking up the dial and feeling pretty good about it. In fact it was the first time in a while that I've managed to capture that "Runner's High" of endorphine rush like that. Somehow managed to find some extra juice and the second half just flew by. It was a lot of fun.

In fact the buzz took me into the Pump class taught by Ryan (who also seemed to be really on tonight), perhaps it's getting to switch up the music this week? I actually unexpectedly loaded up on the weights for squats and did 30kg, which I haven't done in a few weeks. I also kept biceps at 10kg. It was tough, tougher than Tuesday when I was on stage in front of everyone at Bettina's class, but I managed to get through it. Hope I can hang onto it and up some of the other weights. Perhaps another set of small plates for the chest track in the next few weeks (or perhaps just using the heavier bar?

Things to be aware of in Pump: Getting those shoulder blades up and together for the row on Clean and Press.

There was also a party at St Clair tonight! They had a Oscar theme.

I left St Clair feeling on top of the world. I really have to start chasing that adrenalyn high again. There is nothing else like it once you push through.

Getting some Perspective

I did most of a noon hour Yoga class with Yvonne at St Clair today and it was fantastic to just get in some stretching. It's a nice Oasis to take a chance to just breath and relax my body in the middle of the day. Yvonne is also great about me sneaking in partway through classes. She's just happy to see you even if you only wander in for half an hour or even 15 minutes.

I had lunch afterwards with my good friend Vanessa (Hi V!), who is a personal trainer amongst other wonderful things. I mentioned my constant fatigue to her and she thought it might have something to do with my diet which is undoubtably true lately. I tend to get the winter blahs this time of year as well, I have to remember to take some Vitimin D. She also mentioned that it's always helpful to take a look at the bigger picture and the long term goals as well. What am I accomplishing with my regimen? What I found interesting was the idea that your body should get a week's break every 12 weeks. I wonder if that would reinvigorate me? Preferably somewhere in a sunny climate. 8) It also occurs to me my irregular sleep patterns could be a contribution.

Is the amount of physical activity I'm undertaking too much? Am I just getting older and have to start realizing my limitations? I try to get in a couple of rest days a week, but maybe I should think about an extra rest day or scaling back and giving up something. This winter is very different for me than my usual "off season" since I've added in both short-track ice speed skating and indoor inline. I also have a hard time saying no to trying out new things. I have a week to decide whether I want to try Dragonboat racing with some other inline folks (I think I have to register by March 1st), and I've been feeling the pull of wanting to do more intensive Martial Arts training once again. Vanessa pointed out that what it really comes down to is, what did I enjoy doing? I've always kind of dabbled in lots of different things and never really mastered any one thing. Lack of Attention span? I guess there is nothing wrong with that if that is what makes me happy.

Maybe it would help if I tried to map all this out as a plan over a few years? Set some goals or even just agendas. on what I want to do and prioritize a list Maybe rotate activities in and out to keep things interesting and balanced? The problem is the sheer amount of stuff I would love to do and even all the things I've never tried.

  • I really miss Taiko Drumming for example. I received an email a few months back saying Yakudo was now much closer and teaching out of japantown in Markham near my parents (and just up the highway from here now that I am driving).
  • I met a guy at a party this weekend who used to do Capoiera, and between this last Body Combat release which included Capoeira moves and the Capoeira seminar I took last year, it was something I wish I had more time for.
  • or any other Martial Arts! The Self Defense course really got me going again, and our session at Florida Jack's Boxing Gym where they offered to let us try a Muy Thai class as well at some point.
  • Then there is Skate-skiiing, which I did with Carolyn and some of the other girls last year. It would have been nice to do more of that.
  • Getting back to doing outdoor climbing! I used to love going outdoor rock climbing. Now I'm lucky if I get to the climbing gym once a week.
  • So do I sign up for Dragonboat Racing? It's a commitment of Saturday mornings. Candy did mention that we could go skating on the MGT afterwards. I wonder how many practices or Dragonboating races I am allowed to miss once Inline Race season begins?
  • Dodge Ball! Okay, so it's the least likely to happen, but I really did get excited to learn that Kathy and Pat were doing it a couple of years ago. I wonder if they still have that league set up at Toronto Sport and Social?

Wednesday Inline

Once more I'm completely bagged from our late night Wednesday practice, even though I got an insane amount of sleep last night. It probably didn't help that i've been off the inline skates for a couple of weeks. Dorota and Carolyn were a bit nervous about my driving when I'm that tired on the way home, although Kevin seemed fine with it (note: Dorota prefers the front seat for next time). I'm going to try and capture as much as possible right now, otherwise I'll fall asleep and the details will escape me come morning.

We left in a reasonable amount of time today, because I planned on putting on my new wheels when we got there. However, when Kevin and I went to get the car in my underground parking, the front tire was completely flat and we had to go find a gas station to get some air in the tires. So we were running a bit late, which was noted at practice and I didn't have time to put my new wheels on.

Aaron spent a bit of time with the secondary pack today at the beginning of practice, and the general consensus among us was that this was something that we all really needed and appreciated. We each got individual feedback, which was just awesome and I feel incredibly greatful for getting that outside insight. I thought for sure that my twist and shoulder drop into the corners would be an issue, so I was really thinking about keeping squared up while skating, and suprisingly that wasn't a problem (like it normally is). What was the issue was my pushing backwards instead of off to the side. I really hadn't thought that was a problem anymore since I had been working on correcting that when I was skating outdoors this past outdoor season, but it looks like I'm falling into bad habits again. I'll really have to be more aware of that when I'm skating, hopefully so I can load it into muscle memory with enough repitition. I also wonder if I was getting low enough and if my hip was any kind of issue as Aaron was saying just prior to our skating, but I didn't get any comments about that.

Once again it was reinforced that I need to get the new wheels on my skates and get racing skates. It will make all the difference in the world with how I grip and feel the corners. The question of customs versus stocks came up again, and understanding that i was left with is that it all comes down to the amount of space between your feet and the boot and the amount of control and responsiveness you have. I am a bit nervous still about getting customs since they cost so much, but given the fact that I do spend so much time on my skates, it will probably be worth it. I'd just hate to get them and have constant blisters or pain. From what I've been able to tell, it appears that there is a move towards the three point boots with the lower profile and additional support, and at this point it's Bont that is the only brand you can get. It's like whenever I get a computer or any other consumer electronic like a DVD player or Stereo... you just have to accept the fact that there will simply be something newer and better as soon as you make your purchase. I haven't even thought about the even bigger 115 wheels that they are putting on many of the new model skates this season. I wish I were more of a gear-head, perhaps then I could make the decision more easily. It's probably why i'm such a dedicated Macintosh computer user... I prefer "plug and play".

I forgot my neoprene ankle sock again and ended up with another uncomfortable gauge on my right ankle that started to impact on my skating once we started relays.

I probably could have benefitted more today if I tried to skate with the faster pack in the second round, but they were pushing the tempo right off the start and again my technique falls apart when I'm fighting to keep up that kind of pace. I wish there was some kind of happy medium, because I'm feeling like I am not improving on the track pattern/passing drills with the b-pack at this point and it shows when we get into the relay drills.

I'm dreaming of the nice weather when I can skate outdoors in nice straight lines on the trails again at my top speed rather than this constant round and round. I'm hoping I'm making improvements on my cornering by doing indoors, but there are days when I feel like my technique is constantly falling apart and I'm not making any progress at all. Will all this make a difference when the outdoor season begins in five-six weeks from now?

Today's relays seemed to be a bit more aggressive than usual. At a couple of points I was on the receiving end of contact, being grabbed on the shoulder and shoved to the side, pushing me off balance and nearly knocked me over while cornering, which kind of freaked me out. It did lead to some interesting discussion around what kind of contact is allowed. My understanding is that there is much more contact on inline than ice, but it should remain relatively "clean" (hips and lower back?), on the cornering in particular. I heard a few different opinions tonight on what degree of agressiveness is permissible, from Sigrid (who's a world team member) saying that it's just pretty standard aggressive racing, to Kevin saying that kind of contact isn't allowed (although perhaps the Koreans are cleaner racers?). I noticed many of use were knocking skates Ben-Hur style as well after getting pushed. A couple of weeks ago I accidentally knocked Bruce down after a pass-off with a long stride that collided with his skate. Again, the question of what degree of agressiveness is appropriate. Today I opted to shorten my stride and just let them get past rather than have someone fall, but is that my shortcoming? I find most of the time when I've knocked skates with someone, I'm pretty low and stable and it's almost always the other person that falls... so does it come down to how badly do you want the lead position? I know I really hate falling and try my darndest to avoid falling, and I always feel really badly when someone falls because of a collision off of me. Sometimes I'm really worried that it's only a matter of time before someone else is hurt as badly as Travis was or worse.

What I need to work on as well is my relay pushes, Scott told me I was pushing him off to the side. I have to figure out what I'm doing wrong... I think it's because I'm cornering too widely and fighting the momentum pushing me towards the wall, while trying to get the push in. I really do want to improve in doing these relays and I don't want anyone to feel like they are "stuck" with me on their team as a liability.

The other problem is getting sorted out when we are all coming into the corner bunched up and trying to get in position for the pass-off. I know I'm supposed to go tight to the cones, but what happens when there are so many other people at the cones that you need to find your way around? What about the guys that are cutting across perpendicular that you need to get around to get into position?

Once again I found it really informative just to listen to the conversations at Tim Horten's afterwards, as the more elite skaters discussed and analyzed what happened during practice in a more casual setting. It helps give me a bit of perspective on things I should be looking at or have more awareness around. I always have a million questions I want to ask, and maybe I shouldn't be so shy about asking those kind of questions and not feeling so stupid all the time.

I'm having mixed feelings about today's practice, some parts were frustrating, but on the other hand there was some pretty awesome cool things about it as well once I started thinking more about technique. I'm probably just overly tired right now.

WHAT I ATE TODAY
Carrots. Flax Bagel with light cream cheese, apple, 2 custard buns, Orange Juice, Turkey and cheese sandwhich on whole wheat, chocolate muffin, ice tea, rice crepes and hoisin sauce.

Tuesday Pump and Go

Most of a Pump Class today at McCaul with Bettina. Missed the first three tracks, but had to increase my Bicep track to the large plates because there were no mediums available! Feeling it today, but I'm happy I got through the entire track without stopping. Going to try and keep the weight increase.

WHAT I ATE TODAY
BBQ Pork Buns. Apple. Orangina and Limonata beverages, Turkey Sandwhich.

Kickin' Good Times

Combat felt pretty good today at Manulife noon hour with Tanya. I felt pretty good. I think it makes all the difference in the world if you've got a good class of people around you and the group energy really feeds that, particularly on a Monday when people are trying to kickstart their week.

Feeling a little guilty about missing inline practice tonight. We have tickets to see The Overcoat at Canstage. It's been two weeks off now, I'm going on Wednesday for sure, no excuses.

I'm fighting a slight cough, need to get more sleep.

WHAT I ATE TODAY
Flax Bagel with light cream cheese, banana, sour gummy bears, Chicken noodle soup. 2 pork buns, chicken, mushrooms, whole wheat pasta with cheese and tomato sauce, bread with garlic butter, Key Lime Tart, Chocolate Ice Cream, Ice Tea with sugar and lemons, Spinich Salad.

Fat Choi Spirit

Huge Vegetarian meal this morning with my Family for Chinese New Year.

Ice practice tonight felt pretty good. Still having trouble balancing on the left, but everything else seems to be clicking lately, other than the usual fatigue (although I felt it more in my legs than usual tonight... perhaps still recovering from the boxing workout?). I did the beginner and intermediate sessions tonight, at one point Jared told me to get down as low on the corner as I do on the straight and it really helped me. Still trying to think about the hip-thing.

WHAT I ATE TODAY
Veggie dumplings, veggie "beef" noodle, veggie singapore style noodles, fried flat pancake in curry sauce, tea, mango crepe, mango juice with bubbles, banana, apple, timbits, deep fried calimari, hot and sour soup, mahimahi fish, veggies and potatoes. Raspberry Smoothie.
